Job Function: The Associate Director for Sports Medicine is generally responsible for the oversight and operational management of the NCAA Drug-Testing Program, ensuring efficiency and compliance with established policies. Reporting to the Director of Sports Medicine, the Associate Director is responsible for coordinating year round and championship testing, overseeing medical exception approval processes, managing appeals, and serving as the primary liaison to internal staff and external vendors. Additionally, working under the direction of the Director of Sports Medicine, the Associate Director will support various health, safety and performance priority areas, including specific topics like anti-doping and nutrition. Lastly, the Associate Director will provide support to the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports, specifically the Drug-Testing Subcommittee.
Job Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee the day-to-day operations of the NCAA Drug-Testing Program.
- Serve as the primary liaison to internal staff and external vendors.
- In coordination with the Director of Sports Medicine and the Chief Medical Officer/Senior Vice President, develop a plan for year-round and championship drug testing.
- Maintain policies and processes governing the program.
- Monitor global anti-doping industry standards (e.g., WADA, USADA, etc.) to ensure the drug-testing program reflects evolving protocols when appropriate.
- Manage the medical exception and medical exception preapproval processes.
- Oversee and conduct the drug-testing appeals process.
- Develop reports to inform the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports.
- Collaborate with CSMAS and SSI staff to educate the membership regarding the NCAA Drug-Testing Program.
- In collaboration with other SSI staff, provide support to the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports and its substructure, specifically the Drug-Testing Subcommittee.
- As directed by the Director of Sports Medicine, manage projects in the areas of sports medicine, with emphasis on, but not limited to, the areas of:
- Nutrition and dietary supplementation.
- Anti-doping and drug-testing.
- In response to operational demands, assist the Director of Sports Medicine in liaising with NCAA sport playing rules committees to ensure distribution and delivery of information and to harmonize, where appropriate, key health and safety protocols.
- In support of SSI lead staff, provide assistance as required, with day-to-day management of the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program, catastrophic injury reporting, annual concussion reporting and the Institutional Performance Program.
- Serve on various national office project teams.
- As directed, organize meetings and other events that support student-athlete mental and physical health, safety and performance.
- As assigned, work in support of the Association’s strategic mental and physical health, safety and performance related priorities.
- Other duties as assigned by the SSI Senior Vice President and/or Managing Directors.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- 3-5 years of experience in sports medicine, public health, drug testing, anti-doping, compliance, or a related field preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of national and international anti-doping standards.
- Firm understanding of medical terminology related to sports medicine, athletic health care delivery, anti-doping and drug testing preferred.
- A proven ability to manage confidential information and complex logistical operations.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex health, safety and medical information into educational content for diverse audiences and stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills; must be able to work independently and prioritize within a fast-paced work environment.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Experience working in a membership organization and/or supporting organizational governance preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and complex issues (essential) and to effectively and sensitively communicate with diverse audiences.
- Experience in intercollegiate athletics and familiarity with the NCAA structure and function preferred.
- Experience supervising professional staff preferred.
- Estimated Travel Required <20%
- This position will be based out of the national office in Indianapolis, Indiana. Current work environment is hybrid; 3 days in the office and 2 days are remote.
