Job Description: Supervises, instructs, and participates in the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all varsity sports and provides emergency treatment and consultation to students injured in Human Performance and Wellness classes and intramural activities.
Coordinates pre-season physical examinations, as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer, to identify items that make participants more prone to injury.
Acts as a liaison to the team physicians and coordinates on campus visits, as well as, summer updates to the policy and procedures.
Tracks inventory and maintains rehab equipment and emergency supplies; including vacuum splints, crutches, AEDs, oxygen tanks, etc.
Supervises and coordinates results of pre-season medical examinations in consultation with physicians to establish improved conditioning programs for student athletes.
Observes practice sessions of the varsity sports, and discusses possible modifications of schedules or routines with the coaching staff to reduce the risk of injuries.
Attends and provides athletic training services to varsity athletic events. These duties include taping/wrapping of previous injuries and ensuring proper warm-up exercises. Responds to athletes injured at sporting events, evaluates injuries, assures proper medical care, arranges for transportation if needed, and assists until emergency staff takes over care.
Coordinates, evaluates and provides rehabilitation/treatment programs for injured athletes, consistent with doctor’s recommendations.
Coordinates and evaluates the functional testing of previously injured athletes to determine when they can return to active participation. Refers athletes to team physician when final release evaluation is required.
Maintains medical records of injuries, evaluation and treatment for all athletes.
Files insurance claims and maintains records of medical expenses billed to the Athletic Insurance.
Assists in the supervision of student athletic trainers. This specifically includes training on how to prevent injuries, evaluate, treat and rehabilitate. Trains student athletic trainers’ techniques to treat injuries.
Requires ability to interact with student athletic population, apply sound decision making skills, be able to react to emergency situations, and apply good judgment in crisis situations.
Qualifications: Master’s degree (preferred) in athletic training from an accredited college or university, plus certification with the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
