    POSITION: Athletic Trainer

    LOCATION: Abilene, TX

    START DATE: As soon as possible

    SCOPE: The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for delivering athletic medical care and related services to the student-athlete population at Hardin-Simmons University. The athletic trainer will practice independently.  The athletic trainer will operate within the practice domains delineated by the Board of Certification to the full extent of their credentials and education. The practice domains to be carried out by the athletic trainer include:

    1.       Injury and Illness Prevention and Wellness Promotion

    2.       Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis

    3.       Immediate and Emergency Care

    4.       Therapeutic Intervention

    5.       Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility

    The athletic trainer shall apply tasks relevant to the above practice domains with consideration of the rules and regulation set forth by Hardin-Simmons University, the American Southwest Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

    HSU CHRISTIAN STANDARD REQUIREMENT FOR EMPLOYMENT- Candidate must profess a Christian Faith and commitment to Jesus Christ, maintain an active church involvement, and hold the Old Testament and New Testament to be sacred scriptures.

    SUPERVISOR: Director of Athletic Training Services and Team Physician. The athletic trainer will report directly to the Director of Athletic Training Services. The athletic trainer will work independently or in collaboration with the Director of Athletic Training Services. Tasks may be delegated and assigned to the athletic trainer by the Director of Athletic Training Services, and he or she is expected to display a professional and receptive posture. The Director of Athletic Training Services and/ or the Team Physician will have a direct supervisory relationship over patient care provided by the athletic trainer and will have the final say regarding participation status and treatment.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    · Must be able to stand for long periods of time while providing athletic medical coverage indoors or outdoors.

    · Working irregular hours including nights and weekends when applicable is a necessary component of this position.

    · Must be able to drive an automobile.

    · The ability to perform heavy team-lifting in either emergent or non-emergent situations without compromising patient safety.

    · Must possess the physical and manual dexterity (with reasonable accommodations made if needed) to administer physical agents or medication as well as apply selected manual, rehabilitative, emergency care interventions in patient care.

    · Must possess adequate vision and hearing capabilities to be able to successfully complete the patient examination process and to see at longer distances when providing athletic medical care where observing from distances is required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    · Must possess a current certification in athletic training from the Board of Certification, Inc.

    · Must possess or be eligible for licensure as an athletic trainer from the Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

    · Must possess current certification in CPR and AED for Healthcare Providers or Professional Rescuers.

    · An appropriate entry-level degree from a CAATE accredited athletic training program.

    · Computer Skills which will lead to proficiency in the use of an electronic medical record (EMR) and other necessary clinical applications within athletic training practice.

    · Strong written and oral communication skills with the primary application being timely and adequate completion of medical documentation, provision of supporting documentation for insurance claims, production of written reports, and oral communication regarding patient injuries and medical conditions with, patients, authorized family members and representatives, athletic department, and university personnel in certain situations.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

    Provision of athletic medical care- Posses the theoretical and practical knowledge to be able to practice independently as an athletic trainer and serve as a primary athletics healthcare provider per NCAA Independent Medical Care Legislation. The athletic trainer shall exercise the attributes of primary care by:

    1. Ensuring access to care via the clinical practice of athletic training and relevant administrative systems.

    2. Providing care that is comprehensive for a majority of health needs within their patient population.

    3. Coordinating care between peer medical professionals and supervising physicians.

    4. Providing care that continues for a substantial time with recommendations and care that may be given prior to and after a patient’s enrollment at Hardin-Simmons University.

    5. Ensuring accountability for care by regular documentation of patient encounters and measurement of outcomes.

    Compliance- Ensuring adherence to NCAA, American Southwest Conference, and Hardin-Simmons University policies and procedures as they pertain to the practice of athletic training within the college and university setting.

    Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility- Documents all patient encounters, assists with submission of qualifying secondary insurance claims, assists with verification of primary insurance, completion and collection of medical forms each year, as well as inventory and limited budgeting for supplies.

    Communication – Thorough and frequent communication with fellow staff-members, supervisors, patients, and family members of patients when applicable.

    Perform other duties as assigned.
