SUMMARY
A member of the healthcare team, working under the direction of a physician and in accordance with Michigan licensure, this individual is responsible for the safe and effective direct delivery of patient care including injury and illness prevention, wellness protection, examination, assessment, diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, therapeutic intervention, healthcare administration and professional responsibility as it relates to the Standards of Professional Practice, the BOC Professional Standard of Practice and the BOC Practice Domains and Tasks.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Responsible for daily duties concerning injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, and injury prevention of the GVSU student-athlete.
- Responsible for the daily coverage of assigned sport(s): women’s soccer and men’s & women’s track and field or women's volleybal, men's and women's swim and dive and men's and women's tennis.
- Responsible for daily coverage of the athletic training room as scheduled.
- Provides daily injury and illness updates to coaching staff.
- Proper and timely documentation of all medical records related to the health care of the GVSU student-athlete in accordance with HIPAA.
- Supervision of assigned adjunct and/or graduate assistant athletic trainers.
- Assist with annual update of athlete insurance and pre-participation exams.
- Assist with institutional and/or NCAA drug-testing program for all GVSU student athletes.
- Participate in oversight and management of the GVSU Orthopedic Clinic.
- Coordination of care for the GVSU student-athlete with other allied health care professionals.
- Acknowledges the team physician approved Standards of Professional Practice and provides care to those included in the Standing Written Prescription.
- Participates in weekly staff meetings as designated by the primary supervisor.
- Other clinical duties as assigned by Associate AD – Athletics Healthcare or Head Athletic Trainer.
- Demonstrates competencies applicable to job position.
- Supports the long-term goals and objectives of Grand Valley State University and the Intercollegiate Athletic Department.
- As a designated mandatory reporter, will immediately report information to the campus Title IX Coordinator through the appropriate reporting channel if notified of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault, stalking, intimate partner violence (dating/domestic violence), sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, or gender-based harassment per GVSU policy. Following the filing of the report, all information received will be kept private.
- Performs other duties as assigned by manager, which may include, but not limited to inventory management, implementation of institutional and/or NCAA drug testing, GVSU summer sport camp coordination, supervision of student-aide staff, staff apparel ordering and/or liaison to the GVSU MAT Education Program.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Master’s Degree.
- Two years’ experience working as an athletic trainer preferred.
- State of Michigan Athletic Training License.
- Knowledge of professional athletic training theory, regulations, and evidence-based practice related patient care.
- Familiarity with state law, athletic trainer guidelines, and department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of chart/medical record documentation requirements and federal/state laws related to release of health care information and student athlete information in accordance with HIPAA and FERPA.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe work environment in accordance with OSHA.
- Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional athletic training to provide ongoing patient care.
- Skill in time management, problem solving, multitasking, prioritizing, and medical care coordination.
- Skill in initiating appropriate crisis interventions and emergency response.
- Ability to document and navigate an electronic medical record.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to maintain organization and effective time management skills.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and actively listen to understand the perspectives of others regardless of barriers.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse cultures and socioeconomic conditions and maintain a non-judgmental view of patients.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Combination of office and clinical setting. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a clinical setting. Some travel may be required.

Salary: $42,500 - $47,000, commensurate with experience
