Position Summary:
Are you ready to join a collegial athletic training team that operates out of a state of the art sports medicine facility? The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) Seawolf Athletics is seeking applicants to join our team as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. The UAA Seawolf athletic program is a multidivisional member of the NCAA, with 13 teams competing at the Division I and Division II levels.
Duties:
Treatment and Rehabilitation: Select, apply and evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions using evidence-based practices to guide decisions (e.g., manual therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, proprioceptive activities, agility training, cardiovascular training, sports specific training, therapeutic modalities, etc.). Recommend, fit and apply braces, splints and assistive devices to facilitate the patient/client recovery. Assess the patient/client functional status, interpret the results and determine ability to return to activity. Recognize the role of medications in recovery process. Provide patient/client education necessary to facilitate recovery.
Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis: Perform a comprehensive examination of the patient/client with an orthopedic injury or medical condition (e.g., medical history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, referral). Create a treatment plan. Communicate nature of examination and treatment plan to patient/client and other involved health care personnel, adhering to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines in all forms of communication.
Organizational and Professional Health and Well-Being: Use evidence-based practices and the needs of the patient/client to guide care. Ensure compliance with state and federal law and accrediting agencies' policies related to the delivery of health care (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, OSHA). Assist with maintaining all athletic training room locations located on and off UAA campus. Maintain medical records that meet legal and regulatory standards. Abide by federal, state, and local regulations for the proper storage, transportation, dispensing, and documentation of commonly used medications. Assist with developing and implementing policies and procedures related to NCAA best practices/consensus statements, NATA guidelines, conference/league membership guidelines, university guidelines and the operations of a university sports medicine facility (e.g., emergency action plan, concussion management plan, mental health policy, risk management plan, operations manual, etc.). Assist with inventory and purchasing annual medical supplies/equipment (disposable and non-disposable). Coordinate annual maintenance checks on all medical equipment. Annual completion and submission of athletic training continuing education units. Collect patient/client primary, secondary and tertiary insurance plan information, submit medical claims and monitor/track medical bills associated with athletic related injuries. Complete all assigned training to meet the requirements of the position in the specified period.
Injury/Illness Prevention and Wellness Protection: Assess patient/client to screen for potential injuries/illnesses or risk factors that would increase their risk of injury/illness (e.g., pre-participation examination, concussion baseline assessment, initial health history, orthopedic evaluation, mental health screening, body composition, sickle cell trait). Assist with designing and implementing conditioning programs (flexibility, strength, cardiovascular fitness) to reduce the risk of injury and illness. Implement current emergency action plans to ensure medical personnel are prepared in an emergency situation. Obtain and interpret environmental (e.g., ambient temperature, relative humidity, heat index, lightning) and patient/client data (e.g., hydration status) to make appropriate recommendations for patient/client safety and the continuance or suspension of activity. Educate patients/clients, and coaches on the importance of acclimatization and fluid and electrolyte balance in the prevention of heat illness. Inspect facilities to ensure they are free of hazards, are sanitary, and that equipment is maintained properly. Select, apply, evaluate and modify prophylactic and protective equipment and other custom devices for patients/clients to minimize the risk of injury or re-injury. Educate and advise patients/clients regarding proper nutrition and physical activity. Educate patients/clients, coaches, administrators on signs/symptoms of concussions and athletic department concussion management plan.
Immediate and Emergency Care: Perform an initial assessment of the patient/client to determine his/her level of consciousness and the severity of the condition. Implement appropriate emergency injury and illness management strategies following a pre-established emergency action plan (e.g., CPR, AED, splinting, use of spine board, control of bleeding, control of body temperature, use of epinephrine for anaphylaxis, etc.). Perform a secondary assessment and employ the appropriate management strategies for non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses. Formulate a differential diagnosis based on the results of the initial and/or secondary assessment(s). Communicate the nature of the injury or illness and the resulting treatment plan to the patient/client and other involved health care personnel, adhering to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines in all forms of communication.
Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor, Senior Associate/Associate Directors and/or the Director of Athletics.

- Knowledge of National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Role Delineation Study and NATA best practices required.
- General knowledge of applicable National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and various conference (e.g., GNAC, MPSF, RMISA, etc.) rules and regulations preferred.

Four years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Qualifications: Required Education or Training:
Required:
Bachelor's degree with an academic major (or graduate equivalent major program) that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
BOC Certified (Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer).
State of Alaska Athletic Training Licensure or completion within 30 days of the job start date.
GNAC and NCAA required learning modules completed within 30 days of the job start date and/or before having contact/meeting with student-athletes, whichever date is sooner.
FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) certification or certification completion within 30 days of the job start date.
Applicant must possess an unrestricted Alaska driver's license (and CDL with endorsements as required) or be able to obtain an unrestricted Alaska driver's license within 60 days of accepting the job. In addition, the applicant must meet UAA's safe driving criteria.
Preferred:
Master's Degree.
Experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer at the collegiate level.
