JOB SUMMARY: Saginaw Valley State University, a DII member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic conference invites applications for the position of Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer. The University’s athletic program fields 19 Division II intercollegiate teams (9 men’s and 10 women’s) and boasts more than 500 student-athletes. Reporting directly to and working with the Director of Athletics, the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer will direct and supervise the health care of all intercollegiate student-athletes through prevention, recognition, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses with referrals to health specialists as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIIES:
Demonstrated knowledge of and adherence to all applicable NCAA and conference compliance rules and regulations.
Ensure that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations.
Abides by NCAA Bylaws 10.1 and 11.1 regarding ethical conduct and the responsibility to positively contribute to a campus culture of NCAA rules compliance.
Provide the highest level of healthcare to all SVSU student-athletes.
Assist in the recruitment/retention of Team Physician(s).
Develop and maintain a medical referral network to include Saginaw, Bay City and Midland communities.
Maintain an effective working relationship with all team physicians, ensuring student-athlete compliance with team physician’s treatment and rehabilitation guidelines.
Arrange for pre-participation physical examinations for all SVSU student-athletes, including medical history and insurance information.
Ensure that proper insurance billing procedures are implemented and utilized by the entire athletic training staff.
Supervise and participate in the maintenance of each student-athlete’s medical record, checking that each record contains all pertinent information, are up to date, remain confidential and are retained for seven years after completion of the student-athlete’s eligibility.
Supervise the athletic training budget.
Order, organize and maintain all equipment and supplies necessary for the athletic training room and rehabilitation areas.
Coordinate athletic training coverage for all varsity athletic practices and events.
Coordinate athletic coverage for all SVSU sponsored camps and clinics.
Maintain certification in the Board of Certification (BOC) and Michigan Athletic Training Licensure by obtaining continuing education credits through the attendance and participation in clinics, seminars, meetings and workshops.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in Athletic Training
Experience working with Football
Three to five years of experience in the administration of a collegiate sports medicine program.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training
Certified by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers
Licensed, or eligible for state licensure, by the Michigan Board of Athletic Training Examiners.
First Aid, CPR, AED certified or willingness to be certified
Must be able to work flexible hours to cover sporting and non-sporting event(s) that may occur on weeknights, weekends and possibly holidays. Occasional travel may be required.
Ability to communicate in a service oriented and collaborative spirit.
Knowledge and understanding of NCAA rules and regulations
Exceptional leadership skills.
Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
Proven ability to work effectively in a diverse community
Ability to handle and maintain confidential information
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodations.
